Alberta Animal Art Tour @ Alberta Arts District

amilies, animal lovers or art enthusiasts—are you looking for an outdoor activity that allows for social distancing now that Oregon is opening back up? Two Portland-based businesses, Green Bean Books and Bunny with a Toolbelt, have created a free map of 28 animals hidden within the many permanent art works between NE 14th and 30th Avenues on Alberta Street in Northeast Portland. The map, which is available at each business or for download on their websites, gives a clever clue to each animal’s location. For green gumshoes, there’s also a QR code at each location so you can use your smartphone to access the tour.

The walking tour is a great way to learn about the history of the Alberta neighborhood. Many of the art works included in the map are a small part of a mural or sculpture that tells a bigger story about the people who have built that neighborhood.

Green Bean Books and Bunny with a Toolbelt, the creators of the map, are both located in the heart of the Alberta Arts District.

Bunny with a Toolbelt’s Window of Wonders is a gallery you view entirely from the sidewalk, located at 1722 NE Alberta Street. Illuminated from dawn to midnight, hundreds of tiny critters made from reclaimed wood fill the classic storefront, artfully displayed in a window-oriented landscape. Retail sales from the are handled online rather than in the space itself. The main display changes seasonally, which has become a beloved neighborhood attraction in the past two years.

Green Bean Books, at 1600 NE Alberta Street, is a unique children’s independent bookstore that supports readers of all ages with a wide selection of books on all topics. During Covid times you can call or email for bookseller recommendations and ordering and then choose no contact store pick-up or porch delivery. You can also order books to be shipped anywhere in the country on the Green Bean Books website. When things get back to normal you can expect in-store browsing, regular author events and creative story times for kids.

Torchsong Entertainment is a local production company formed in 2015. Our mission is to bring new and exciting musical works, written and performed by local artists, to the greater Portland area. The Torchsong team creates unique and innovative cabarets and original rock musicals. We like to say we write musicals for people who hate musicals (This ain’t Rodgers & Hammerstein)! Our shows are hilarious, quirky, nerdy, creative, and incredibly fun!

Because of the “Stay at Home” orders and Covid-19 virus, Torchsong has been forced to cancel our first three shows of the season. Please consider donating to help us with this financial loss as well well supporting our “do -over” 2021 season, that will feature two original rock musicals written by local Portland artists.

Samaritan Lodge #2 is a caring community dedicated to supporting health care, relieving hunger, and providing affordable access to a variety of educational opportunities. Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) is a non-political and non-sectarian co-ed international fraternal order founded in 1819. The mission of the IOOF is to “visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.” and to “improve and elevate the character of mankind.” So ask yourself: Do you want to learn to be a better person and empower yourself to be more successful in all parts of your life? Do you want to help make your community a better place and help those in need? Do you feel lonely or crave quality social interactions and want to be part of something important? If you answered YES to any of these questions then you are ODD enough to be an Odd Fellow! For information on how to apply for membership and more visit: http://samaritanlodge.com. All donations are tax deductible, and current fund will go to help the lodge stay afloat during these uncertain and financially unstable times.
